Effective September 1, 2026, the Alberta Court of Justice will use the term “Indigenous Background Report” in place of “Gladue Report.”

This change is being made after meaningful consultation with members of the Gladue family, Indigenous leaders, Indigenous-serving organizations, and others who work closely with the Court. The Court is grateful for the guidance it has received and makes this change with deep respect for the wishes of the Gladue family and for the continuing importance of using language that is accurate, thoughtful, and respectful.

This change does not in any way alter the substance of these reports, nor the process by which they are researched and written. The new terminology is intended to better reflect the purpose of these assessments: to provide the Court with relevant information about an Indigenous person’s personal, family, community, and systemic background, where that information may assist in a fair and informed decision-making process.
